Britain welcomes fresh talent to stay

International students and professionals in the United Kingdom got an excellent chance to find their way in the UK through the uncertainty brought in by Brexit. A points-based immigration system aims at attracting the brightest and the best from around the world. The new regime calls to help science, technology, engineering & math (STEM) students and professionals from emerging economies get permanent British residence faster. It becomes effective from January 1, 2021.

Also, Britain’s government announced a new particular pathway to obtaining British citizenship for eligible Hong Kongers from January 2021.

As Britain welcomes fresh talent to stay, the US does not stay behind. The US system, in contrast to the British, offers a more difficult path to permanent residence for students. Those who complete their higher education in the US are eligible for non-immigrant H1-B visas. The only demand is – if they can find jobs. Such applicants are often left in the lurch after that as the time taken to get a green card, or a permanent residence could range from five years to several decades. At the same time, the average time to get permanent residence status under the skilled points-based system is much shorter and more predictable. To change the situation, in August, the Trump administration has relaxed some rules for H-1B visas. New ruleset allows applicants currently outside the US being considered for a visa if they meet a specific set of criteria, according to the US Department of State.

The recently announced UK graduate route for international students provides an option to stay in the UK for two years after studies to work or look for work. The new route will open from the summer of 2021.
