James Butterwick, Art advisor to Oracle Capital Group, is delighted to announce that four important works on paper (Tramway, Khreshchatik, Forest-Boyarka, Locomotive) by the great Ukrainian Cubo-Futurist Alexander Bogomazov (1880-1930) were acquired during TEFAF Maastricht (March 13-22) by the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands.
Three of the drawings – Tramway, L’vovskaya Street, Kreshchatik and Locomotive – feature scenes in Kiev, the other the Forest near the village of Boyarka. All the works date from 1914/15.
Bogomazov pioneered a new aesthetic, based partly on French Cubism and Italian Futurism, imbued with powerful rhythm and angular tension. Dr Lisette Pelsers, Director of the Kröller-Müller Museum, described his works as ‘hidden treasure’ after viewing them on our TEFAF stand.
The four drawings will enhance the Kröller-Müller Museum’s stunning collection of Cubist and Futurist works from the explosive decade of 1910-1920 – led by Giacomo Balla’s Forme Rumore di Motocicletta and also including Vilmar Huszar’s Vincent, early works by Léger and Mondrian, a 1912 still life by Juan Gris, and Umberto Boccioni’s bronze sculpture Forme Uniche della Continuità nello Spazio.
The Kröller-Müller Museum opened in 1938 near Otterlo in central Holland, in a building purpose-designed by the celebrated Belgian architect Henry van de Velde. This group purchase by one of Western Europe’s top private museums fully vindicates our decision to showcase works by the under-rated Ukrainian Master at the world’s top fair.
